Breast surgery in Australia and New Zealand has something rare and worth valuing: a mandatory audit that reports to the individual surgeon rather than the unit. But its performance indicators are process measures, covering referral, therapy, multidisciplinary discussion and timing. It records the cosmetic result as scored by the operating surgeon, and it collects no patient-reported outcome at all.

For endocrine surgery there is almost nothing. There is no association audit, and the only thyroid registry is voluntary, covers cancer alone, and excludes benign thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery entirely. In the United Kingdom, endocrine surgeons receive a personal outcomes dashboard they can use for appraisal. Here, the same annual audit obligation applies with no vehicle to meet it.
