In breast surgery the cosmetic outcome is conventionally recorded as the surgeon’s judgement: good, fair or poor. The patient is not asked. Yet satisfaction with how she looks, and with the decision she made, is what she lives with, and the two views do not always agree.

In endocrine surgery the gap is different but no smaller. Voice changes after thyroidectomy occur even when the nerve is anatomically intact, and can persist for a year or more.
