CHALLENGE
Building a data-driven practice from day one
After completing her fellowship in urogynaecology, Dr. Rebecca Young was preparing to transition into private practice. With greater clinical independence, she faced the responsibility of not only delivering excellent care but also building a practice that could stand up to scrutiny, deliver consistent results and support long-term growth.
A key priority was finding a way to reliably track patient outcomes. In private practice, there is no built-in oversight. Without structured data, it can be difficult to assess performance accurately or recognise areas that need improvement. For Dr. Young, outcome tracking was about more than just numbers. It meant having clear visibility into her surgical results, understanding trends over time and building clinical confidence through objective feedback.

But while these requirements were essential, they came with a cost. Traditional systems for managing surgical records were often time-consuming, paper-based, or disconnected from day-to-day clinical workflows. For an experienced specialist juggling full surgical lists, teaching responsibilities, and ongoing patient care, the idea of adding more administrative tasks was simply unsustainable.

CHALLENGE
Building a data-driven practice from day one
With more than two decades of surgical experience, Dr. Petra Ladwig understood the importance of maintaining accurate records and meeting professional obligations. Over the years, she had witnessed the growing expectations around audit compliance and CPD reporting and the increasing demand for surgeons to back their expertise with structured data.

I knew I wanted to use a surgical database from the start. It had to be efficient, well-designed, and flexible enough for prolapse and incontinence procedures.
Patient follow-up was another critical piece. Traditional systems often rely on manual calls or inconsistent processes, which can lead to missed feedback or delayed responses. Dr. Young wanted a reliable way to identify when patients were struggling postoperatively, so she could act quickly and prevent complications from escalating. Managing follow-up well also ensured that her patients felt supported, which directly influenced satisfaction and trust.
Reputation was the final and equally important consideration. As a new specialist entering private practice, referrals from GPs and satisfied patients were vital for growth. Dr. Young recognised that being able to demonstrate strong outcomes, proactive patient engagement. A commitment to best practice would help her earn trust and build credibility with both peers and patients.
In launching her practice, Dr. Young wasn’t just looking for a way to log cases. She needed a system that supported safe surgery, patient-centred care and professional growth from day one

SOLUTION
Using INSIGHTS + PROMS together
Dr. Young chose SurgicalPerformance for its clean design, ease of use and focus on clinically meaningful data.
With INSIGHTS, she monitors widely accepted clinical outcomes across key procedures, such as numbers of surgical procedures performed, patient demographics and comorbidities and - last but not least - complication rates.
With PROMS, her private patients receive additional automated follow-ups, allowing her to act quickly on recovery from surgery, such as unexpected pain, ability to mobilise, fatigue and patient (dis)satisfaction.

If a patient reports a high-severity result, it flags straight to my inbox. I can reach out, manage the issue early and support them before it escalates.
